Itinerary

Go beyond the usual tourist path and discover the living ecosystem of Kuang Si. This journey isn’t just about the famous turquoise pools; it’s about understanding its source, its people, and the life it sustains.

Your adventure begins around 9:00-9:40 AM with a hotel pickup, followed by a relaxing Mekong River cruise—the perfect introduction to “slow travel” in Laos. Upon arrival, you’ll bypass the main crowds and embark on a special 45-minute trek along a secluded forest trail. This path leads you through the protected watershed, the very source of Kuang Si’s magic, where ancient trees stand guard over the springs.

This hidden trail brings you to a beautiful natural spring. Here, nestled by the water in a tranquil outdoor setting, you’ll find a small, open-air restaurant run by a local Khmu family—a place rarely seen by other visitors. Enjoy your lunch (choice of dishes) in this stunning natural plaza, knowing your meal directly supports the local community.

After lunch, you’ll have a flat, scenic 3-km forest trail and reach the top of the falls, and then descend to the main cascades. Enjoy 1 hour of free time to swim in the stunning turquoise pools, relax, or explore the jungle trails.

The journey continues as we follow the water’s path to the Kuang Si Heritage Rice Farm. Witness how the falls’ water irrigates the terraced paddies and taste fresh, traditionally pressed sugarcane juice. You’ll see firsthand the vital connection between the forest, the water, and the local way of life.

Conclude your unforgettable day with a magnificent sunset cruise, returning to Luang Prabang around 6:30 PM. This gentle journey back on the Mekong perfectly captures the tranquil spirit of your adventure.

(For those on a tighter schedule, an optional return by minivan is available, arriving in Luang Prabang by 5:30 PM.)

Departure: Luang Prabang, Activity: Kuang Si Waterfalls, Mekong morning cruise, Whisky village, Hmong village, Lunch at Manifa Elephant Camp

Cruise from Luang Prabang to the Pak Ou Caves with a stop to taste rice whiskey and explore a cave. After lunch in an elephant camp, travel by car to the Kuang Si Falls and visit a Hmong village. Our best seller guided door-to-door package!

We will pick you up at your accommodation between 8:00 and 8:30 am. Go straight to the pier for the departure of the longtail boat trip and embark on the mighty Mekong. Enjoy the many views from the water, witness rural Laos, pass by local villages, fishermen, and children and soak up the scenes of daily life by the river.

In the first little over an hour, the boat makes its first short stop at the Ban Xang Hai, also known as the Whisky Village. Here you see the process of making Lao Lao, the country’s beloved rice whiskey, and taste the fresh local delights. Why not pick up a couple of bottles for later?

The boat will take you slowly along the Mekong River to Pak Ou Caves. We arrive at a small boat landing dock where stairs lead you straight to the cave. These limestone caves have been places of worship for thousands of years, and Buddhist statues and idols have filled these natural caves. Hear legends and stories about the caves from your guide and explore the caves.

After visiting the caves, the boat will enter the Ou River to see the spectacular limestone cliffs. Then a 30-minute boat ride down the Mekong River will take us to Manifa elephant camp for lunch. Enjoy a buffet lunch at the restaurant with a view of the Mekong River and free-roaming elephants.

This adventure destination package takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall. We will have 2 hours to explore the three-tiered waterfall, walk along a nature preserve trail, swim in refreshing turquoise puddles, and visit a bear conservation center.

On our way back into Luang Prabang, we will stop at Ban Na Uang (Hmong resettlement village). Here you can meet the Hmong people who originally lived in the highlands. After returning to Luang Prabang, drop-off points are the post office on the main street, near the night market, or at your accommodation (by prior arrangement or on request).

Go beyond Kuang Si's turquoise pools. Trek through villages and rice paddies sustained by ancient waterways. End your authentic Lao day with a stunning sunset cruise on the Mekong

Visit a Khmu village, then hike 2-3 hours on a scenic trail to Kuang Si. Enjoy lunch at a hidden Khmu restaurant by a natural spring. Swim in the turquoise pools, visit a rice farm, and return via a stunning sunset cruise.

Visit an authentic Khmu village for a genuine glimpse into rural Lao life.

Trek through scenic countryside and forested hills on a hidden trail (total 3-5 hours, 10-14 km 6.2-8.6 miles).

Dine at a secluded Khmu restaurant by a natural spring, supporting the community.

See the “water cycle” connecting the protected forest, falls, and rice paddies.

End with a relaxing sunset cruise, embracing the slow travel spirit on the Mekong.

We will drive from Luang Prabang to the Khmu village of Ban Nonghiew (approximately 20 km – 40 minutes). Upon arrival near the village,　get off the car and start hiking. You will have time to explore the village, where traditional stilt houses, freely roaming ducks and buffalo, and villagers at work provide an authentic glimpse into rural Lao life.

From the village, we will set off on a 2-3 hour gentle hike. This hidden trail winds through forested hills and scenic countryside, passing near Ban Thapene (the gateway village to the falls) before arriving directly at a beautiful natural spring.

Here, nestled by the water in a tranquil outdoor setting, you’ll find a small, open-air restaurant run by a local Khmu family—a place rarely seen by other visitors. Enjoy an authentic Lao lunch (choice of dishes) in this stunning natural plaza, knowing your meal directly supports the local community.

After lunch, you’ll reach the top of the falls and descend to the main cascades. Enjoy 2.5 to 3 hours of free time to swim in the stunning turquoise pools, relax, or explore the jungle trails.
