Itinerary

Get picked up from your hotel in Luang Prabang between 8:30-9:00 AM. Travel by van to the second dam on the Nam Ou River, then board the boat to Nong Khiaw. As we go upstream, secluded and natural scenery surround us. Admire the beautiful Nam Ou River valley surrounded by limestone mountains. Enjoy a boxed “bento” style Lao lunch on board. In the afternoon, disembark for a village visit, followed by a short hike to 100 Waterfalls. The boat ride will take you to Nong Khiaw just before dusk, where you’ll watch a beautiful sunset over the Nam Ou River. The tour ends at the river bank nearest to your Nong Khiaw hotel.

Luggage

You are allowed to bring a standard amount of luggage equivalent to airline checked baggage. Additionally, if you are returning to Luang Prabang, you are welcome to leave your luggage safely at our office during your stay in Nong Khiaw.

While you are away from the boat for the hike, the boat captain will remain on board to ensure your luggage is safe.

Itinerary

Rather than driving the 140km directly from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang, we take a day trip to Luang Prabang, doing some old-fashioned travel in Laos, taking boat cruises and detours to enjoy the beautiful scenery and local culture as much as possible.

Meet at Manifa Travel Nong Khiaw office, just off the bridge in Nong Khiaw, at 8:45 AM. Board a boat on the Nam Ou River for a misty 2-hour morning cruise to the Second Dam. A minivan awaits you at the dam’s boat pier and leaves for Manifa Elephant Camp, where you will have lunch.

After lunch, you have two options for the next leg of the journey:

1. Continue by boat for a relaxing Mekong River cruise.

2. Switch to a kayak to paddle down the Mekong River to the Pak Ou Caves (Conditions: Minimum 2 participants, no additional charge).

Both groups will stop at Pak Ou, where the Nam Ou River joins the Mekong, to explore the Buddha caves on the opposite bank. After exploring the caves, kayakers will rejoin the main boat.

Then, head down the river to Luang Prabang together. After a stop at a whiskey village that produces sticky rice spirits, the sun begins to set. You will watch a beautiful sunset over the Mekong River from the boat. You will arrive in Luang Prabang just before 6 PM. We will transfer you to your hotel of choice in Luang Prabang.

Meeting point

Right next to Nong Khiaw Bridge. Som Nang View Point, Nong Khiaw Manifa Travel office that also serves as the ticket office. Meeting time is 8:45AM. Most hotels are within walking distance. Hotels further away should be able to arrange a van or tuk-tuk to take you there. It’s a good idea to arrive at the meeting point early (1 hour in advance) and climb up to the viewpoint to watch the sunrise.

Ending point

Boat pier on Luang Prabang Peninsula (within walking distance to the main street where Luang Prabang Night Market is located) or any hotel or location in Luang Prabang within our designated area We can transfer you to your hotel in Luang Prabang city center after arriving at the pier. We cannot transfer to hotels outside the city center (such as The Namkhan or Hillside – Nature Lifestyle Lodge), so you will need to make your own arrangements for transportation (tuk-tuk, etc.).
