For an early start, you may choose the optional departure between approximately 5:30 and 6:00 a.m. to observe the daily alms-giving ceremony.

Known locally as Tak Bat, this centuries-old tradition sees monks in saffron-coloured robes walking quietly through the streets to receive offerings of sticky rice from local residents. Your guide will explain the cultural and religious significance of the ceremony and help your family observe it respectfully.

We then visit Luang Prabang’s lively morning market, where residents shop for fresh produce brought in from surrounding villages. Your guide will introduce you to seasonal fruits, vegetables, herbs, and other Lao ingredients while sharing stories about everyday life in the city.

After breakfast, we continue our exploration of Luang Prabang’s historic centre with visits to the Royal Palace Museum, the adjacent Haw Pha Bang temple, and Wat Mai. Together, these important landmarks offer an introduction to the history of Laos, its royal heritage, and its Buddhist culture.

We then travel into the countryside to Kuang Si Heritage Rice Farm. Surrounded by traditional rice fields, irrigation channels, and rural scenery, the farm offers a glimpse into the agricultural life that has sustained Lao communities for generations. A Lao-style lunch is served in a traditional wooden stilt house overlooking the fields.

In the afternoon, we visit the magnificent Kuang Si Waterfalls. Explore the forest trails and the waterfall’s beautiful series of cascades, with time to swim in the refreshing turquoise pools when conditions permit. We also visit the nearby bear rescue centre, where your family can learn about Asiatic black bears and the threats they face.

After returning to Luang Prabang, climb Mount Phousi to enjoy panoramic views as the sun sets over the Mekong River, the historic town, and the surrounding mountains.

Day 3 | Wat Xieng Thong, Pak Ou Caves and Manifa Elephant Camp

At 9:00 a.m., your guide will meet you at your hotel and take you to Wat Xieng Thong, Luang Prabang’s most celebrated Buddhist temple.

Located near the tip of the historic peninsula, Wat Xieng Thong was regarded for centuries as a ceremonial gateway to the royal capital. Foreign dignitaries traditionally arrived and departed by river, climbing the riverside steps to enter the temple through its main gate. We follow this historic approach before exploring the temple’s graceful architecture, richly decorated chapels, mosaics, and religious artworks.

From the nearby pier, we board a traditional boat and travel upstream along the Mekong River towards the Pak Ou Caves. The cruise offers beautiful views of riverside villages, forested mountains, and the limestone cliffs of northern Laos.

Situated in a dramatic limestone cliff at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers, the Pak Ou Caves are among the most revered pilgrimage sites in Laos. The two accessible caves—lower Tham Ting and upper Tham Theung—contain more than 4,000 Buddha images in many shapes and sizes, most of them carved from wood. For generations, local people and pilgrims have brought these images to the caves as offerings.

After visiting the caves, we cruise downstream to Manifa Elephant Camp, where a buffet lunch is served in a peaceful riverside setting.

In the afternoon, your family will spend time learning about the camp’s elephants, their daily lives, and the relationships they share with their mahouts. Guests may choose between a guided forest walk alongside the elephants or a carefully managed elephant-riding experience. The programme is accompanied by local mahouts and an English-speaking guide.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., we reboard the boat for a relaxing sunset cruise back to Luang Prabang. On the way, we stop at Ban Xang Hai, a riverside village known for its traditional production of lao-lao rice whisky.

Enjoy the changing colours of the Mekong landscape before arriving in Luang Prabang at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Day 4 Luang Prabang  Departure

After breakfast, enjoy free time until your scheduled transfer.

Your driver will meet you at the hotel and transfer you to Luang Prabang International Airport or railway station for your onward journey.
