Explore the Mekong by private boat, visiting Donkhoun Island, Ban Xang Hai, and Pak Ou Caves before a scenic Nam Ou detour. Enjoy a riverside buffet lunch and a private elephant experience at Manifa Elephant Camp, then return on a sunset cruise with complimentary drinks. Exclusive boat and ground transfers, plus a dedicated English-speaking guide, are included.
Discover the Mekong at your own pace on a private day tour combining riverside villages, the sacred Pak Ou Caves, and an elephant experience at Manifa Elephant Camp. Finish the day with a relaxing sunset cruise back to Luang Prabang.
Your boat and all ground transportation are reserved exclusively for your group, with a dedicated English-speaking guide accompanying you throughout the day. Your elephant experience is also arranged exclusively for your group, allowing you to learn and participate with personal guidance from the mahouts.
9:00 AM — Hotel Pick-up & Private Mekong Cruise
Meet your guide at your hotel and transfer to the pier, where your private boat awaits. Settle in for a scenic journey upstream, passing forested hills, riverside settlements, and glimpses of everyday life along the Mekong.
The boat journey to Pak Ou Caves takes approximately 1.5 hours, excluding sightseeing stops along the way.

Donkhoun Island — A Peaceful Riverside Stop
Step ashore on Donkhoun Island, traditionally associated with royal journeys to the Pak Ou Caves. Take a gentle walk around the island, visit its small temple, and enjoy views across the Mekong as your guide introduces its local significance.
Ban Xang Hai — Traditional Rice Spirits & Village Life
Continue to Ban Xang Hai, often called the “Whiskey Village,” to learn about lao-Lao, the traditional Lao rice spirit. Walk through the village with your guide and discover how rice is transformed into a drink that plays a familiar role in local hospitality and celebrations.
Depending on the day’s production schedule, you may see part of the distilling process. Browse the village stalls and, if you wish, sample some of the locally made varieties.
Pak Ou Caves — Buddha Images Above the Mekong
Visit the Pak Ou Caves, set in a limestone cliff near the meeting point of the Mekong and Nam Ou rivers. These sacred caves house thousands of Buddha images placed here by devotees over generations.
Explore the lower cave, Tham Ting, where Buddha statues fill the rocky alcoves overlooking the river. If you wish, climb the steps through the trees to the upper cave, Tham Theung, to discover a quieter, darker chamber and its ornate entrance. Your guide will explain the caves’ religious significance and their connection with Lao New Year traditions.
Nam Ou River — Limestone Scenery
Before heading downstream, enjoy a short scenic detour along the Nam Ou near its confluence with the Mekong. Admire the dramatic limestone cliffs and rugged rock faces rising above the water, with time to relax and take photographs from your private boat.

Manifa Elephant Camp — Riverside Buffet Lunch
Cruise downstream to Manifa Elephant Camp for a buffet lunch at the restaurant overlooking the Mekong. Vegetarian options are available. Enjoy the river views and take a break before your afternoon elephant experience.

Afternoon — Your Private Elephant Experience
Join the mahouts, the elephants’ daily caregivers, for an experience arranged exclusively for your group.
Begin with a visit to the mahout village and an introduction to the elephants’ daily care. Watch a demonstration of routine health checks and learn what the mahouts look for when examining an elephant’s eyes, ears, mouth, and feet. You will also discover how body measurements can help estimate an elephant’s weight.
Meet the elephant you will accompany and learn how to approach and interact under the mahouts’ guidance. Before the forest outing, the team will explain how to mount and sit for bareback riding.
Set off through the forest, experiencing the elephant’s movement along trails and sloping terrain while observing the surroundings from a different perspective. Continue to the Mekong for the bathing part of the experience, following the mahouts’ instructions as the elephants enter the water to cool off. Finish by offering fruit and vegetables and learning more about their feeding and care.
Activities follow the mahouts’ guidance and may be adjusted to suit the elephants’ needs, weather, and river conditions.

Around 4:00 PM — Sunset Cruise to Luang Prabang
After the elephant experience, take time to shower, change, and relax before boarding your private boat for the return journey.
Enjoy complimentary drinks as you cruise downstream in the late-afternoon light. Watch the changing colours over the Mekong and surrounding hills as the sun sets—a peaceful conclusion to your day.
On arrival in Luang Prabang around 18:00 PM, your private transfer will take you back to your hotel.
Timings are approximate and may vary with river conditions, the season, and the pace of your group. Access to the caves involves steps, with a longer climb to the upper cave.
