Kuang Si Waterfalls
The Kuang Si Falls, sometimes spelled Kuang Xi or known as Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls, is a three levelled waterfall about 29 kilometres (18 mi) south of Luang Prabang. These waterfalls are a favorite side trip for tourists in Luang Prabang. The falls begin in shallow pools atop a steep hillside. These lead to the main fall with a 60 metres (200 ft) drop.
These waterfalls are magnificent and impressive. Relax and enjoy the spectacular natural beauty of waterfalls. Water from upstream cascades down jagged limestone cliffs into turquoise blue pools of various sizes. There you can enjoy a refreshing swim. Adventurous can walk up the steep path to the top of the falls for a spectacular view.
The locals charge an entrance fee of 20,000 kip to visit the site, but it is well maintained with walkways and bridges to guide the visitor.
Kuang Si waterfall the rescue centre cares for a number of Asiatic Black Bears that have been rescued by the Lao authorities from the illegal wildlife trade. They are supported by Free The Bears Fund Inc. (an Australian charity) and does not charge an extra entrance fee but you can support them by purchasing their goods.
How to get to Kuang Si Falls?
(1) Tuk Tuk Tuk Tuk is a taxi used by locals. A vehicle that is a modified light truck. You can charter a round trip for about US$ 20-25.
(2) Motor Bike / Scooter You can rent one in town for around US$15 per day. (Plus the cost of petrol)
(3) Minivan Shared US$7, Private US$50-60. You can make a reservation at our office. You can also arrange at your hotel or guesthouse
Activities in Kuang Si Falls
- Park The falls are in a nature park. You will see large tropical trees and flowers you will probably never see in your country.
- Swimming Dressing rooms are available. Shower and locker unavailable. Please take care of your valuables.
- Trail You can climb to the top of the waterfall to see the source of the waterfall. Left is the easy way. Right is the hard way. Be careful during the rainy season, as it can be slippery and sometimes completely flooded/inaccessible after heavy rain. Decent footwear is recommended. Please be sure to time your ascent accordingly.
Best Season
The best season to visit Kuang Si waterfalls is during the the dry season from December to May, when the monsoon season has finished and the cascading pools have settled again. During the monsoon season, we recommend Tad Sae Waterfalls.

- Kuang Si Butterfly Park
Situated 300m before the entry of Kuang Si Waterfall. Kuang Si Butterfly Park is a project that was initiated in January 2014 from 2 Dutch passionate people from Holland. The mission is to create a research centre studying and publishing about Laos butterflies, host plants and preservation because of environmental issues in Laos. Ban Na Uang (a Hmong resettlement village) is on the way to the waterfall. You can meet the Hmong people who originally lived in the highlands. They wear Hmong traditional costume and introduce their culture to visitors. - Laos Buffalo Dairy
Here is the very first social enterprise in Laos producing cheese, ice cream, cakes, yoghurt and milk shakes made out of buffalo milk. Optional 45-minute farm tour ($6.25 per person)
Restaurant recommendations for lunch
It takes about 40 minutes one way to the falls. Stay at the falls for about 2 hours, and it will soon be lunchtime. You can use the local eateries in the falls, but there are also alternatives that have received good reviews from tourists on Google Maps and TripAdvisor.
- Carpe Diem Restaurant
This is a waterfall retreat. Beautiful restaurant in a marvelous setting downstream from the Kuang Si waterfalls. Western or Laotian, vegetarian set menu $15/pax (reservation required) An a la carte menu is also available without reservations.
- Ock Pop Tok Living Craft Center
Set in lush tropical gardens and located on the banks of the Mekong, the Living Crafts Center is the perfect place to learn more about the fascinating world of Lao textiles and handicrafts. There is a café with terrace seating overlooking the Mekong River. Lunch set menu $13 or $15 (reservation required) An a la carte menu is also available without reservations.
